About Our Church
Westmount Baptist Church
Who We Are
At Westmount Baptist, we strive to follow Jesus Christ as revealed in the Bible, which we believe to be God’s unique and authoritative Word for all people. Just as Jesus engaged with those searching for answers, love, and belonging, we, too, are on a journey of faith and discovery.
We are:
- Seeking answers to life’s most important questions.
- Building an authentic community where we can safely explore these questions.
- Pursuing a life of purpose, relevance, and meaning.
- Striving to make a positive impact on society.
- Committed to worshiping God and caring for His creation.
We haven’t arrived yet, but we are on the journey—and we invite you to travel with us! Join us for worship every Sunday at 11 AM EST as we grow together in faith and experience the depth of God’s love.
Our Partnerships
In our faith journey, we are blessed to share fellowship and mutual support with various partners as we seek to serve God more effectively. Locally, we collaborate with other churches as part of the Quebec Association of Baptist Churches. Regionally, we are one of 365 churches within the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec. Nationally, we join over 1,000 congregations through the Canadian Baptist Ministries. Globally, we unite with more than 100 million Christians as part of the Baptist World Alliance, strengthening our collective mission in Christ.

Our Beliefs
History
We believe that Water Baptism by Immersion, after Regeneration, and the Lord’s Supper are the ordinances Christ gave to the church. These ordinances are performed as acts of obedience and as a testimony of the believer’s faith in a Crucified, Buried, and Risen Saviour. They are both symbolic and are not to be regarded as a means of Salvation.

Who We Are
Our Team & Leadership

Joel Kwadwo Okyere
Senior Pastor
Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, Pastor Joel developed a passion for IT and technology early on. After earning a BSc in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Mines and Technology, he worked as a software engineer. Seeking to further his education, he moved to Canada to pursue an MBA at Concordia University. However, during his studies, he felt a strong calling from God to enter full-time ministry, which led him to change course and pursue a Master of Divinity at Acadia Divinity College, focusing on theological studies.
Though the transition was challenging, Pastor Joel was determined to follow God’s plan. He drew strength from the story of Abraham in the Bible, finding comfort and encouragement through the journey. Over the years, he served in various pastoral roles in Nova Scotia, including Senior Pastor and Youth & Young Adult Ministry Assistant. During this time, he also launched an outreach ministry for international university students in the Maritimes, recognizing the spiritual and physical needs of this demographic.
Pastor Joel’s ministry is deeply shaped by his passion to see the love and gospel of Jesus practically demonstrated to people from all walks of life. In 2019, he felt called to serve at Westmount Baptist Church at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. During a time when the church faced financial struggles and the potential for closure, Pastor Joel held fast to God’s promise during his time of prayer: “If you continue to do what I ask you to do in serving Me, I will build My Church.” Over time, he has seen God keep His promise to continually provide for the Church, build the congregation, and see things turn around.
A central aspect of Pastor Joel’s leadership is his commitment to making prayer a cornerstone of the church’s culture. He is passionate about discipleship, leadership development, and multicultural ministry, striving to empower the next generation of church leaders and foster inclusive, faith-driven communities. He is also an advocate for charitable projects and works to help churches embrace cultural diversity through missional outreach.
In addition to his pastoral role, Pastor Joel works as a Cyber Security Analyst in Canada. In his spare time, he enjoys road trips, camping, and spending time with his energetic Goldendoodle, Titan.

Our History
Baptist work in Montreal began with the establishment of the First Baptist Church on St. Helen’s Street in 1831, followed by the founding of Montreal Baptist College a year later. In 1902, members from First, Oliver, and Grace Baptist Churches united to form Westmount Baptist Church. Initially, services were held in the Queen’s Theater on St. Catherine Street and later in a church building on the corner of de Maisonneuve and Olivier Avenues.
The First World War delayed the construction of the current church building but officially began with the turning of the sod by the Right Honorable David Lloyd George in October 1923. The cornerstone was laid in 1924 by Honorable Albert Matthews of Toronto, a former member and later Lt. Governor of Ontario, with the church dedicated in April 1925 by Rev. Gabriel Reid Maguire, F.R.G.S.
Designed in the Greek Renaissance style by architect Sidney Comber, the church interior exemplifies “free church” architecture, placing the preaching of the gospel at the heart of the worship experience. Unlike narrow sanctuaries of liturgical churches, the seating is arranged close to the pulpit and choir. The positioning of the Communion Table, pulpit, and baptistery emphasizes biblical exposition, the believer’s baptism as the rite of entry, and the Lord’s Table as a simple remembrance meal.
The sanctuary houses a beautiful Casavant organ dedicated to the war dead of World War I, along with chimes presented by the five children of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Jones. True to free church traditions, the sanctuary is simple and unadorned, save for heraldic shields bearing symbols of the gospel—such as Christ as King, Shepherd, Anchor, and the Word of God as the “Sword of the Spirit” and the “Helmet of Salvation.”
